Ceiling soundproofing ideas for reducing upstairs noise

Hello, I’ve been trying to understand what can be done about noise coming from the apartment above mine. It’s mostly footsteps and some movement sounds that become noticeable in the evening. I didn’t think much about it before, but recently it started to bother me more during quiet hours. While searching for possible solutions, I ended up reading through New York Soundproofing and noticed they have separate sections about ceiling soundproofing and different types of materials. They also explain that not all noise is the same and that impact sounds behave differently than voices. That part made me pause because I’m not sure I fully understand what applies in my case. Has anyone looked into this kind of ceiling issue more seriously?

I remember going through a similar situation, and the distinction between types of noise really matters more than it seems. When I was reading about it, I noticed that ceiling-related issues are often linked to impact noise rather than airborne sound. That explains why some solutions that work for walls don’t give the same result for ceilings. On that site, they show how different approaches are used depending on whether the sound comes through structure or air. It helped me understand why just adding random materials wouldn’t solve the problem. Looking at how sound travels through surfaces gave me a more realistic idea of what to expect.
